Sažetak
The paper investigates the ability of normal- sighted persons to estimate the size of an indoor space and their position inside it, using only acoustical cues obtained from acoustical response of the room to an impulsive stimulus. Two experiments were designed to deal with room size estimation and to address the issue of egocentric localization. Virtual environments de! ned in room acoustics simulation software were utilized. The room size estimation experiment utilizes four rectangular rooms with di" erent sizes. The egocentric localization is investigated on three positions in the middle-sized, ordinarily shaped room only. Hand claps as a stationary source produced by the persons themselves and footsteps as a moving source produced by another person were used. The listeners came from the student population, with various levels of knowledge on acoustics, music production and architecture. They were guided only with their experience, with no speci! c training. The 2nd order Ambisonics spatial sound encoding/reproduction technique was used to recreate the sound environment. The results were statistically analyzed, to determine the extent of the investigated abilities.
