Sažetak
We live in the world, which, being rich in various nations and cultures, communicates and collaborates using not only technology but also trying to behave in a similar way by sharing the same preferences regarding music, clothes, entertainment, etc. According to Lewis [1], people of different nationalities might have difficulties communicating with each other due to the difference in their traditions and norms. When it comes to values and anti-values, the situation is more similar. But how similar is it? The authors of this paper decided to do a cross-cultural analysis of the two opposite notions, love and hatred, which represent a value and its anti-value. The analysis is based on the questionnaire designed by the authors of the paper who collected the definitions of these two notions in four languages (Russian, Croatian, German and French). Dictionaries (monolingual) and encyclopedias from different fields (philosophy, psychology, theology, and general encyclopedia) were used as references for the definitions. The questionnaire consists of the statements (definitions) of love and hatred. The students of the four nationalities from different scientific fields were asked to mark the level of their agreement or disagreement with the definitions. The authors’ aim was to investigate whether these (anti-)values are perceived in a different way with regard to the culture (nationality) and scientific field. The analysis of the obtained results has provided an insight into the four cultures through their languages and the significance that love and hatred have for the representatives of the four cultures.
