Sažetak
ABSTRACT - The results of an epidemiological investigation of the frequency of chronic rheumatic complaints of the cervical spine are presented within the framework of a study of chronic diseases. The random sample was formed of 1037 males and 1321 females aged from 48 to 67 years from six different com- munities in Croatia, Yugoslavia. The subjects were examined by specialists in internal medicine and rheumatologists. The diagnosis was based on subjective symptoms and objective signs observed during a detailed clinical examination of the cervical spine. Clini- cally determined cervical and/or cervicobrachial syndrome were divided into four degrees. Marked disease of the cervical spine wa.s noted in 21% of females and 15% of male subjects (P<0.01). In addition to this 45% of the female and 40% of the male population had rheuma¬tic complaints of the cervical spine, but with no clinical findings of functional changes. A clear clinical picture of cervicobrachial syndrome was diagnosed in 6.4% of females and 4.8% of males. With progressive age the percentage of subjects with complaints and/or disease of the cervical spine increases. A review of literature data on the frequency of cervicobrachial disease in the world is presented as are also data from several investigations into the frequency of rheumatic complaints in Yugoslavia in selected populations.
