Sažetak
Summary Smoking habit in relation to changes in the electrocardiogram was analysed in a sample of population consisting of 2 1.61 women and 2 049 men men aged 35 — 54 years from six regions of Croatia. Data on smoking habits \vere collected by means of a questionnaire. Non-smokers were considered to be the subjects who had never smoked or who smoked less than one cigarette a day or less than 25 grams of tobacco per month over a period of less than one year. Farmer smokers were considered to be the subjects who had ceased to smoke at least a month before examination. Present smokers were classified in two categories: those who have been smoking for a period of up to 20 years and those who have been smoking for over 20 years. In smokers there were no significant Q wave findings. S-T segment depression was not present in male smokers ; it was significantly more frequent among female smokers than in other groups. Inverted T-wave was more often present in male smokers and former smokers and in women former smokers than in others. Left axis deviation was more often found in women smokers and former smokers. Incomplete right bundle branch block, sinus tachycar- dia, S-T segment elevation and high T wave amplitude were frequent find-ings in male smokers, asnd incomplete right bundle branch block and sinus tachycardia in women smokers. The necessity for prospective investigations of the relationship between smoking habit and ECG signs of coronary heart disease is pointed out.
