Sažetak
Industrial development of poultry farming in Croatia started in 1961, when the first modern farms in the public sector were built. Until then the poultry farming conducted on individual farms was without any control. In the year 1961 there was 7.01 million poultry in all, 96.53 % of which were reared on private farms. From 1962 to 1991 there was 17.10 million poultry. At that time 49.48% of poultry was kept on private farms, whereas 50.52% belonged to public sector. The period from 1991 to 2000 should be presented apart from other development periods, because at that time, social and political changes, as well as war took place in Croatia and those changes had a negative impact not only on poultry production, but also on the whole Croatian economy. In the year 2000 number of poultry in Croatia was 11.45 million in all 58.71% of which belonged to private farms and 41.29% to former public sector. It is estimated that in the total number of poultry, chickens have a portion of 93%, turkey 2%, ducks 2% and geese 3%. The portion of other poultry species such as guinea fowls, quails, pheasants and pigeons, is in the total number of poultry without significance. The poultry slaughtering in the period 1991-2000 was reduced from 30.51 million to 20.47 milliion pieces, and the average weight of processed poultry increased from 1.5 to 1.7 kilograms. In the same period the egg production was reduced from 885 mill. to 774 mill. In the year 2000 the average consumption of poultry was 19.70 kg per houssehold member, which makes 30.45% in the total consumption of meat and meat products. The consumption of eggs and powdered eggs was 9.32 kg per household member. Lately, the import of different chicken hybtofd (Hybro, Ross, Cobb, Arbor Acres, Avian, Sasso, as well as Lohmann Brown, Issa Brown, Shaver and Hissex) has been made possible. Poultry have been kept on farms and fed intensively with complete forage mixtures. Croatian poultry farming went hhrough different development phases, but taking into consideration that the production is maintained in spite fo difficult war conditions and that there is poultry breeding tradition, as well as significant scientific support, we estimate that Croatianpoultry production is now facing better times. We also expect that better living standards and development of tourism will affect greater demand for poultry and eggs.
