Sažetak
S U M M A R Y Data on respiratory symptoms and functional tests and their variability in a sample of the adult population from six different communities of Croatia were analysed by means of computer processing. The sample consisted of 3265 subjects, 1575 men and 1690 women who were examined in an interval of three years. At the time of the first examination the age groups were 35 to 54. The analysis has revealed that the symptoms and findings which usually serve for the definition of chronic nonspecific lung disease often showed a great variability in the same subjects over a period of three years. The following data have been separately analysed: chronic phlegm present for at least three months during a year and recurring during more than the last two years, attacks of dyspnea, bronchial mur- murs, FEVi/FVC < 60% and the finding of FVC < 80% compared to normal findings. In approximately every third or fourth subject the respiratory sym- ptoms and the findings recorded at the first examination were not confirmed during the second examination. During the second examination, however, there were two to four times more subjects with the same symptoms than the subjects in whom these symptoms no longer were present. Thus the prevalence of the registered patients with respiratory symptoms showed a considerably higher incidence after a period of three years. New symptoms indicating obstructive disorders were observed predo- minantly in the older age groups while the symptoms of chronic cough with phlegm were not usually seen in the age groups over 35. The phenomenon of chronic phlegm is explicitly associated with tobacco smoking while the phenomenon of asthma and the finding of obstruction depend considerably less on smoking. It seems that the phenomenon of obstructive disorders is associated with a lower hygienic and social standard. The course of chronic nonspecific pulmonary disease need not be progressive, thus opening greater possibilities for preventive measures and the treatment of this syndrome.
