Sažetak
Interface phenomena occur between liquid and solid phases (e.g. baths – textiles). The research of adsorptive, electrokinetic and thermodynamic properties of textile materials leads to knowledge of the mechanisms in textile wetting, finishing and dyeing processes. The present chapter systematically investigated the interface phenomena of modified cotton fabric (by mercerization and cationization treatments). Mercerization is performed following the technological process. Cationization was performed with the different compounds - short chain quaternary ammonium compounds, 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl-trimethyl ammonium chloride (CHPTAC) and 2, 3-epoxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (EPTAC), and long chain commercial products with cationic character for the same purpose - polymer with polyammonium linkage Denimcol FIX-GF (CHT/Bezema), reactive polyammonium compound Rewin OS (CHT/Bezema), and quaternized polyglycol ether of fatty amine Sintegal V7 conc. (Chemapol - Czech Republic). Cotton fabrics modification was researched after cationization through morphological and structural changes. Interface phenomena of cationized cotton fabrics were investigated through surface free energy, contact angle, water, ionic surfactant and dyestuff adsorption, hydrophility, electrokinetic potential and specific amount of surface charge. Systematic study of interface phenomena of modified cotton fabrics sets the base for prediction of its behavior in the wet finishing processes. By comparing mercerized and cationized cotton, it was concluded that cationization during the mercerization process with short chain cationic compounds results in new material and a new dimension to cotton pretreatment and finishing. The modified cotton retains all the beneficial properties of mercerized cotton with a change of surface charge that ensures further quality improvement.
