Sažetak
Railway freight transport is well suited to the mass transport of goods over long distances. In Eastern Europe a considerable volume of goods is usually carried by rail. On the Ukrainian border side is the Chop railway station, the largest entry/exit rail point. On the Hungarian border side is the Zahony railway station, and on the Slovakian border is the Čierna nad Tisou railway station. The Čierna nad Tisou railway station is on the TENT-T as part of the Rhine – Danube Core Network Corridor. There is also the wide-gauge Mat'ovce exit border station on the Uzhhorod–Košice line. The Mat'ovce railway station has a connection to the TEN-T. Total railway freight between Slovakia and Ukraine is around 16 million tonnes per year, which amounts to about 40% of the entire railway freight transport in Slovakia. The most frequently transported goods are iron, coal and metal. Around 247, 000 freight cars are used yearly for transport between Slovakia and Ukraine. The most important organizational aspect of transport is the existence of two different procedures. In Slovakia, transport is organized according to the Convention concerning International Carriage by Rail (COTIF), and in Ukraine transport is organized according to the Agreement on International Goods Transport by Rail (SMGS). Today all procedures are done completely manual. This means that transport documentation is rewritten from SMGS to COTIF, or vice versa. This process is very labour- intensive and time consuming. This paper analyses the current situation regarding the organizational aspects of railway transport between Slovakia and Ukraine. Following the analysis we performed a case study of the technological process of transport of methodology at the Čierna nad Tisou railway station with a proposed solution for electronic data exchange between the rail and customs authorities of Slovakia and Ukraine.
