Sažetak
The Republic of Dubrovnik was bordered by Ottoman province of Bosnia along the entire mainland. From 18th century onwards the Bosnian governors often served as mediators in disputes between the Ottoman Porte and the Republic of Dubrovnik and also as the main protectors of the Dubrovnik privileges granted by the sultans. Mutual advantages and services generally formed a friendly coexistence between immediate neighbours. But the turbulent life on the Dubrovnik - Ottoman border often generated tension and hostility between populace of different religion, identity and values. The detail archival record concerning the murder of an Ottoman subject Mustafa Kurtağa provides an overview of the legal status of the Republic of Dubrovnik and the diplomatic methods employed by Dubrovnik’s envoy meeting the Bosnian governor Ali pasha Hekimoğlu. Moreover, comparison of the legal treatments prevailed in concurrent murder cases of Dubrovnik merchants and shepherds reveals a valuable insights into a complex relation between the Republic of Dubrovnik and the Bosnian officials in the period of Ottoman administrative decentralization.
