Sažetak
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element and it is commonly added in feed mixtures for all animals in intensive production. Organic forms of selenium are recognized as more bioavailable than inorganic forms for most species. The diets of over two-thirds of the world’s population lack one for more essential mineral elements. Therefore, the experiment was conducted to study the effects of biofortificated wheat enriched with selenium on selenium distribution in tissues and antioxidant status in rats. Agronomic fortification of wheat was performed by fertilization treatments included foliar application of 10 g/ha Se from Na2SeO4. Adhesive solution Herbovit® 90 (Herbos d.d., Croatia) was used in concentration 0.1%. Total Se concentration in control wheat was 0.056 mg/kg and in biofortificated wheat 0.346 mg/kg. A total of 16 male Wistar rats (Crl:WI BR) at average body weight 120 g, were assigned into 2 dietary treatments. All rats were kept individually, 8 rats per treatment, placed in metabolic cages for 14 days. At the end of experiment, all animals were sacrificed in order to determinate selenium content in tissues and excretions. Significantly higher (P<0.01) concentration of selenium was determine in muscle, liver, kidney, brain, blood, feces and urine in relation to the control group. Activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in blood and superoxide dismutase (SOD) was higher (P>0.05), but glutathione reductase (GR) significantly lower (P<0.01) in the experimental group. Nutrition with higher concentration of selenium by fortificated wheat raised selenium content in tissues, but did not influence on antioxidative enzymes in rats.
