Sažetak
Publishing studies seems to have emerged rather recently on the international scene as a new academic field of study that looks at the wider role and meaning of publishing in society and analyses the mechanisms within the so-called publishing and cultural industries. However, publishing studies are highly context-dependent and act more as an umbrella term that encompasses several (traditional) fields ranging from history of the book, media and communication studies, cultural and literary theory, business studies and economics, history and biography, sociology and digital transformations of media. This paper explores the intellectual and knowledge structure of publishing studies as an academic discipline as reflected in course syllabi reading lists gathered from a research sample of 19 university level publishing programmes around the globe. We chose a bibliometric approach to show current state of publishing studies and its application in educational context. We have applied different bibliometric methods and techniques to analyse bibliographic references extracted from a subsample of all publicly available course syllabi. Reference and citation analysis was conducted to show most important document types in use and to detect major knowledge producers and influencers. Student readings were additionally categorised and mapped to discover the provenance of dominant research topics and reveal interdisciplinary connections with converging and/or neighbouring disciplines (e.g. history of book, media and communication studies, sociology of culture, literary studies, etc.).
