Sažetak
Aim: Periodontal medicine is a branch that for many years hasbeen focusing on relationship between periodontal disease andsystemic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, preterm birth, rheaumatoid arthritis, lung disease, stroke, and soon. Majority of these investigations fail to classify the periodon-tal disease in a uniform way. The aim of this investigation wasto determine specifically periodontal disease parameters for eachlevel of the disease severity, namely: early, moderate and severeperiodontitis and compare the results in two subsets of exami- nees – healthy and patients suffering from coronary heart disease(CHD).Material and Methods: 320 patients of both genders wereexamined, aged 25–75 years, 160 in each group. All of themwere non-smokers and did not suffer from diabetes or any othersystemic disease. All teeth were examined for the followingparameters: full mouth plaque score (FMPS), full mouth bleed-ing score (FMBS), clinical attachment loss (CAL), furcationinvolvement, and presence of periodontal abscess(es). Results: Patients suffering from CHD had greater FMPS andFMBS ; they had a lower chance of having CAL ≤2 mm, andmore frequently had CAL ≥5 mm. They also suffered more fre-quently from periodontal abscesses and furcation involvement. Finally, the severity of periodontal disease correlated signifi-cantly with total cholesterol levels. Conclusion: There are differences between prevalence of certain degrees of periodontal disease in patients with and without CHD. Registration of mere presence or absence of periodontal disease is insufficient ; the most severe forms are more likely to occur in patients with CHD.
