Sažetak
The novel Cuore (Heart) by Edmondo De Amicis, as part of Italian literature's canon, has contributed to the shaping of the modern Italian's identity after the country united in 1861. This modern Italian was brought up and educated in the spirit of solidarity, empathy and mercy in the family and in the centralized secular school. Serbian and Croatian translations of Cuore published at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th can be considered as re-codifications, or adaptations, and were based on the work’s pedagogical dominating factor, interpreted in the context of the Serbian national unity (translation by S. Kalik), or in the context of the South-Slavic idea (translation by P. Kuničić). During and after World War II the translations by M. Predić, V. Bakotić-Mijušković, M. Radičević, M. Drganc and J. Tabak were published, most of them with communicational residues (Torop 2010) and in very large editions. Even though Cuore has undergone harsh criticism and has lost the influence it had in the past, it remains one of the best novels on the beginnings of public schooling in Italy and deserves new and more accurate translations.
