Sažetak
The interest for traditional oral proverbs existed among the educated intellectual elites in the 15th century on the Croatian territory. Several Croatian writers collected proverbs and included traditional proverbial examples in their own literary and scholarly texts. At the beginning of the 18th century, in accordance with the similar European stylistic patterns, the interest for collecting and utilizing proverbs as a rhetorical argument in printed works increased. The paper presents a comparison of two different types of including traditional oral proverbial examples in popular and academic printed books. Pavao Ritter Vitezović (1652–1713), a manager of the printing-house in the centre of northern Croatian region Zagreb, had been publishing popular almanacs from 1691 to 1705. During this period, he included oral proverbs in his publications. The proverbial examples were popular among the readers of the almanacs and Vitezović decided to publish a separate book of proverbs under the title "Priricsnik aliti razliko mudrosti cvitje" that appeared 1702. Alberto Fortis had published the book "Viaggio in Dalmazia" in 1774. In accordance with growing interest for popular traditions in other European countries, he described oral traditions and costumes among the Morlacchi. After that, in the southern Croatian parts, especially Dalmatia, the interest for all types of folk traditions increased. Đuro Ferić (1739– 1820) recorded and collected proverbs in Dubrovnik. His book "Fabulae ab Illyricis adagiis desumptae" printed in 1794 was a unique example of the explanation of traditional proverbial meaning in narrative texts that Ferić wrote in the manner of classical authors.
