Sažetak
Young people today “have to deal with more complex communication repertoires” (Haddon and Vincent 2004). They are faced with variety of media options, including interpersonal media, traditional and convergent media which are provided on different media platforms. The paper aims to map “communication” and “media repertoires” (Haddon & Vincent 2004) and practices for group of graduate student of journalism on Faculty of political Science, University in Zagreb, Croatia. Study will address the question of how the choices are made about which of the available communication options to choose, and how these choices are embedded in the context of everyday life (moral economy of household, daily routine, social networks and social background) “within the structure and dynamics of the domestic process of consumption of which is but a part” (Morley 1992) but also within the dynamics of increasingly mobile daily media engagement practices. The sense-making process is seen as a constitutive part of cross-media practices, together with routine, habitual non- discursive or “prereflective” behaviours (Moores 2006). The findings are based on qualitative study which comprises several self-reports of 60 students from the same generation 2011/12 graduate study of journalism at the Faculty of political science in Zagreb. The students’ selfreports comprise general patterns of their media engagement, communication diaries, decision making processes with regard to their media repertoires including the process of domestication of new media (technologies and contents) within their households, online and interpersonal activities. Additional semi- structured interviews with those subjects who are the most and with those who are the least engaged in cross-media practices will be conducted. The primary goal is to get closer to real life of young people by listening their own experiences (McMillan & Morrison 2006) in order to better understand their (cross) media practices, how they make their media choices, how they make sense of their own media practices in the context of their everyday life, within their families or in their households, with friends, on the faculty, but also on the move: in the meantime or in between: home, faculty (work) and other daily physicaly located activities. The main assumption is that closer “insider’s” look at general cross-media practices and experiences of a researched group of students can help us to better understand the meaning of media and media related practices in life of these young people and the way they are integrated in everyday life and their social interaction. The study is comprising total media matrix (”old” and new media, including interpersonal media) available withn Croatian media system and used by research subjects.
