Sažetak
One of the most important elements in transformation of European towns in the 19th century was the transformation of bastion fortifications around town nuclei, with the key purpose of constructing public buildings and creating public spaces. Fortification systems, strongly impacting the morphology of Renaissance and Baroque towns over the course of four centuries, started losing their original purpose towards the end of the 18th century. Fortifications turned into obstacles to urban development, and during the 19th century they were transformed and integrated into an urban tissue in most towns. Many of the present-day city centres in Croatia were formed by transforming bastion fortifications during the 19th and 20th centuries. Following representative European examples, in many Croatian towns spaces of new identity and new urban values were created. However, in some towns the space obtained by the demolition of fortifications has never been completely articulated or it was used for a development inappropriate for the city centre as a consequence of disrespect for the heritage. This raises the question of how to give these spaces the final shape in the future. Given that, on the one hand, there is a danger of leaving the completion of such spaces to questionable initiatives of the market and private investors. On the other hand, their completion and shaping reached a deadlock due to the conservation approach of maintaining the status quo. It is necessary to determine the criteria and methods for quality planning that would affirm the heritage as a valuable resource, a generator and an active participant of sustainable spatial, socio-cultural and tourism development. This paper determines models and basic planning principles for sites of bastion fortifications in selected Croatian towns on the basis of characteristic types of bastion spaces and their specific urban characteristics.
