Sažetak
Due to the specific geopolitical situation in Croatia during the wars with the Ottoman Empire from the 16th to the 18th century, bastion fortifications were built in many Croatian towns. They had a strong impact on the urban morphology during their existence. By demolishing and transforming these fortifications during the 19th and early 20th century, following the model of representative European examples such as Vienna, Frankfurt, Bremen, Brno, etc., present-day city centres were shaped. In accordance with the prevailing transformation model (the model of a ring marked by the formation of urban areas with a concentration of public buildings, representative residential buildings and public spaces), most of the fortifications were demolished and spaces they had previously occupied was used for creation of a high quality design expansions of town nuclei. The space use and the built structure of new developments differed from one city to another, depending on specific local conditions, needs and development possibilities. Given that, these spaces represent valuable cultural heritage, both in terms of an urban whole resulting from transformation and in terms of preserved fortification elements (examples of preserved fortifications in Osijek, Karlovac, Koprivnica etc.). This paper aims to show how the current planning documentation affirms the value of this specific type of heritage and how is the development of such spaces planned. The study will include an analysis of urban plans of selected towns in continental Croatia in terms of the planned use of space, the structure of development and the measures for the protection of cultural heritage in spaces created on the site of former bastion fortifications. The aim is to show the need for establishing uniform criteria for future development of these specific spaces in order to enable the creation of new elements of urban identity based on cultural heritage.
