Sažetak
The paper centers around the question: Is benevolence good enough protection of the vulnerable? The discussion is framed by the work of David Hume who (in)famously stated that rational beings of “inferior strength, both of body and mind” do not fall within the scope of justice. Instead, they should seek protection of the superior beings under the laws of humanity (benevolence). Given the influence of Hume’s statements, this paper examines what lies behind such a call. It is argued that benevolence does offer protection of the vulnerable, however such protection is limited, fragile, unreliable, and – at its best – paternalistic. The criticism of Hume’s concept of benevolence does not undermine the relevance of his thoughts in modern discussions on the protection of the vulnerable, mostly regarding his views on motives for benevolent actions.
