Sažetak
Many nutritional studies are concentrating on examining food for its protective and disease preventing potential. Some medical disorders, such as diabetes mellitus, lead to a constant state of enhanced oxidative stress. Diabetes mellitus is characterized by oxidant/antioxidant imbalance. Oxidative damage, caused by high glucose level, may initiate and promote the progression of diabetes mellitus. The present study showed in vitro inhibition of carbohydrate digestive enzyme, alpha-glucosidase, and antioxidative effect of four methanol extracts (0, 5 and 1, 0 mg/mL) from the: Globularia cordifolia L. (MEGC), Globularia punctata L. (MEGP), Globularia meridionalis L. (MEGM) and Globularia alypum L. (MEGA) (fam. Globulariaceae) (harvested in the field of Croatia). They are a rich source of phenolic and flavonoide compounds. One of the most important antioxidants inside the cells is glutathione (GSH). The glutathione redox cycle is a fundamental component of the cellular antioxidant defence system. Concentration of total glutathione (GSH), free thiol (–SH) groups and catalytic activities of glutathione S-transferase (GSTs) were determined in Hep G2 cells treated with different methanol extracts of Globularia spp. These extracts showed significant antioxidant activity in hyperglycemic conditions that was carried out using the mentioned assays. Antioxidant activities of Globularia spp. may be explained by their phenolic and flavonoide content, indicating their possible use for the treatment of diabetes.
