Sažetak
The recent history has shown that privatization process in former Communist countries has often been contentious and prone to scandals which were readily picked up by the media. This thesis consists of two parts. The first part will depict the prevalent attitude of certain widely read Croatian weekly magazines about transition and privatization in mid nineties. The second part addresses media treatment of privatization-related topics in the five-year period 2007-2012. The analysis was made taking into account the number of articles on the topic (content analysis), the dominant theme and style (discourse analysis). The central point was to compare media coverage of privatization, taking into consideration different political, economic and social circumstances of the time. The main difference between two periods is the fact that the first period was marked by individualization of the privatization process by the prominent figures that have deserved the title “tycoons” whereas the second period was less concerned with individuals and more with corporate privatization. Although the analysed papers demonstrated sensational approach to the topic of privatization in both periods, this was slightly less evident in the second period when the titles were more neutral and subtitles less prominent. In case of specialised magazines, treatment of privatization was marked by objective analysis but with a prevalent focus on development of financial markets. Few of the covered articles in both periods showed elements of true investigative journalism. Given the prevalent commercialization of the mainstream press, mainstream weeklies mostly relied on sensational and superficial coverage of the topic of privatization, lacking in-depth analysis.
