Sažetak
Shift workers who work at night and sleep during the day are permanently exposed to the combined effects of the lowest point of biological clock and the loss of sleep. They have to sleep in a part of the day which is unsuitable for sleep regarding the inner circadian wake-sleep rhythm 2C circadian rhythms of other bodily functions, and rhythms in one's environment, which causes sleep disturbances in a certain number of workers. The aim of the authors was to study the effects of two hypnotics with various half-times, zopiclone and nitrazepam, on disturbed sleep after work in the night shift. The subjects were three groups of shift workers who were administered zopiclone, nitrazepam, or placebo during three weeks of work in the night shift, with 3-week intervals between each week of drug intake. Differences were found in the way some characteristics of sleep changed over a week of night shift between the groups who were given hypnotics and the placebo group. There were no undesirable residual effects of hypnotics resulting from such short-term intake of hypnotics, nor any negative consequences on the working abilities during work in the night shift. Hypnotics applied proved to be rather useful for occasional pharmacological improvement of the length and efficacy of daytime sleep after working in the night shift.
