Sažetak
The benkovac platy natural stone is an attractive thinly bedded limestone excavated in the wider area of the Benkovac city in Croatia. It belongs to the zone of Upper Eocene layers. As a raw material it is excavated in the shape of thin slabs. Because of its decorativity, platy texture, physical and mechanical properties, stone is traditionally used in building industry. The benkovac platy stone samples show considerable textural anisotropy. Bedding and lamination are the main features of its visible heterogeneity. Structurally and petrographicaly three different lithotypes were determined. The main excavated variety of the benkovac stone is laminated lithotype. This laminated lithotype is composed of two different thiner lithotypes named grainy and micritic. In order to determine physical and partly mechanical properties the samples were subjected to testing and analyzing. The results of density, porosity, capillarity and water absorption testing confirmed textural anisotropy as a result of lamination. In addition, in lesser extent, uniaxial compressive and flexural strength and ultrasound speed propagation were also tested.
