Sažetak
Strategic thinking and determination towards reaching the set long-term goals can bring deep structural changes in an organisation. Resources being scarce, institutions need to secure their optimal usage more than ever before. This paper will discuss an example of good governance at the University of Rijeka (Croatia) even in times of crisis and financial cuts. It was crucial to secure funds for strategic investments at the University, including the 23.6 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the project Research Infrastructures for the Campus-based laboratories at the University of Rijeka in 2014. Years of strategic thinking, especially the impact of the establishment of the University of Rijeka Centre for EU projects, have been analysed. The paper will present the most important milestones and events which lead to establishing the Centre for EU projects, it will present the Centre's services and give a summary of major activities and their impact to the development of the University over the last years. An overview of solutions for the future developments shall also be given. Decision-making is equally relevant for private and public institutions, especially when faced with limited available resources. Financial crisis should not be seen only as a limiting factor for development. It can also be a facilitator of change if institutions manage to stay focused on their long-term goals.
