Sažetak
The present study is a part of a longitudinal investigation of variations in various indices of shiftwork tolerance in young shiftworkers. The study focused on sleep characteristics in order to evaluate whether they were changing over the first seven years of exposure to shiftwork. It was conducted with workers who started shiftwork for the first time at the age of 19 years and stayed in shifts for seven years (n=86). The subjects worked in a rapid rotating shift system with shifts rotating in the order mornings-afternoons-nights-days off. Sleep characteristics were examined four times: when the workers reached 1.5, 3.5, 5.5 and 7.5 years of shiftwork experience. There were no significant changes in sleep duration on days of the morning and night shift over the observed seven-year period. On the morning shift days workers slept on average 6 hours and 3 minutes and on the night shift days only 5 hours and 23 minutes. On the afternoon-shift days and days off, having favourable conditions for sleep, workers slept longer. Prolonged sleep on afternoon-shift days compensated for short sleep on morning shift days while prolonged sleep on days off compensated for the short sleep on night shift days. However, with the increase of exposition to shiftwork sleep duration on days with favourable sleep conditions was gradually reducing. Thus, after 7.5 years of shiftwork exposure workers slept on afternoon shift days 54 minutes shorter and on days off 27 minutes shorter than after 1.5 years of shiftwork exposure. At the same time there was no significant change in the sleep quality over this early period of shiftwork exposure.
