Sažetak
Mathematícal modelling has played an important role in dealing with thermal pollution problems. In this paper, mathematical models used in thermal pollution studies are assessed and discussed in general manner. primarily considering global characteristics. The emphasis is placed on physical-level models, but ecological-level models are also considered. Important issue of models validity and domain of app1licability is addressed in a separate section. Both, hydrothermal and ecological models show similar pattern of approaches, ranging from simpler, empirical to complex, structurally insightful procedures. The weak point of both kinds is lack of validation and largely undefined domain of applicability. Validation of hydrothermal model has received more attention, but these efforts have not singled out any particular model for general use. The thermal-pollution related models, and their use, are perhaps best characterized by several, more or less pronounced, discrepancies: between pragmatic , interest in complying with standards and scientific interest in research and understanding, between made1s' usefulness and poorly established validity, between backgrounds and interests of , hydrothermal and ecological modelers.
