Sažetak
Given the increased public demand for reduced traffic noise levels, there is a growing demand for better noise protection solutions. Road and railway noise barriers are the most common and cost effective choice. Nowadays, noise barriers are usually constructed out of concrete, wood or steel while concrete is most frequently used material (~ 50 %). Concrete barriers are produced with expanded clay or wood fibres panels as a noise absorbing layer. Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Zagreb developed, tested and applied an innovative type of ecologically sound concrete noise barriers - Rubberised Concrete Noise barriers or RCN barriers. These barriers interconnect waste tyres recycling with noise protection. Namely, concrete can incorporate rubber granules from recycled tyres to form a noise‐absorptive layer. By incorporating 40 % rubber granules recycled from waste tyres, recovered from various vehicles, in the absorbing layer it forms an innovative solution in production of noise barriers. RCN barriers presents innovative, ecological and sustainable building product used for reduction of noise pollution on road and railway infrastructures. The concept provides multiple ecological benefits: improving waste management by preventing disposal of recyclable materials on landfills, achieving noise protection of urban areas utilising the recycled materials and thus reducing the exploitation of natural resources.
