Sažetak
This contribution has been prepared for participants of the workshop Academia ragusina: On the Survival of Culture from the Fall of the Western Roman Empire to the Invention of Printing (Dubrovnik, April 13-18 2009), together with accompanying handouts and practical excercises. After a brief introduction on what it is that we call Vulgar Latin, the contribution continues with an overview of its most characteristic features, primarily in phonology (such as, changes in the vocalic quantity, syncope, betacism, palatalisation, assimilation of consonans, etc.). Since the remains of the spoken language are mostly preserved in epigraphic monuments, it was necessary to give brief introduction in epigraphy, various kinds of epigraphic monuments (i.e. sepulchral, votive, honorary, ...) and basics in Roman onomastics. The most important part of the contribution consists in analysis of several epigraphic monuments from the Roman province of Dalmatia illustrating the usage of various Vulgar Latin features that were previously mentioned.
