Sažetak
The objectives of the study were to investigate the impact of probiotics on the corrosion behaviour of three types of nickel-titanium (NiTi) orthodontic archwires in artificial saliva. Uncoated, rhodium coated and nitrified NiTi wires were examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic polarization. Morphology of wire surface was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Measurements were performed in pure artificial saliva and in artificial saliva with the addition of probiotic bacteria Lactobacilus reuteri (BioGaia, BioGaia AB, Sweden). Temperature was adjusted to 37±2˚C, and pH to 4.8 to simulate acidogenic pH profile of one- and two-day-old plaque in patients with bad oral hygiene. Results of this study indicate that the corrosion resistances of the uncoated NiTi wire and nitrified NiTi wire in pure artificial saliva are very high, while rhodium coated NiTi wire indicates lower corrosion resistance. Probiotic in artificial saliva changes corrosion resistance of all examined wires by increasing the possibility of localized corrosion. In comparison with the corrosion currents in pure artificial saliva, in artificial saliva with probiotic value of the corrosion current is lower for uncoated NiTi wire, same for nitrified NiTi wire and higher for rhodium coated NiTi wire. Under the conditions examined in this study the best corrosion properties are observed by nitrified NiTi wire.
