Sažetak
The Internet is a historical and world-wide phenomenon. The Croatian example is a bit different from the other national information infrastructures in that Croatia managed to build its leading-edge infrastructure in less than five years, starting from nothing, immediately choosing Internet technology instead of the OSI concept. This has all been done despite a devastating war and intensive international denial of the support that is usually available for countries in transition. Croatia has recognized the significance of Internet technology and has patiently and intensively deployed services and pilot projects simultaneously. The whole infrastructure has been open for the whole society. Like everybody else, Croatia was faced with an ever-growing demand for network bandwidth on the Internet. The reason is not only in the increase in the number of connected hosts and users but also in the deployment of new network applications exchanging an immense amount of data. This called for the reconstruction and upgrading of the CARNet (Croatian Academic and Research Network) backbone. Audio and video conferences and computer telephony are some of the new technologies requiring high video-on-demand bandwidth and announcing the dawn of the new era in which all types of communication, isochronous as well as data-packet, will be integrated in one infrastructure. CARNet was facing all those questions in 1994-5. It was decided to deploy a nationwide 155 Mbps ATM network. This new high-speed backbone core now covers all four Croatian universities as well as five additional campuses.
