Sažetak
The inquiry about the nature of meaning, the usage of language within the social context, the relation between the mind and language, as well as the pertinence of language to truth are the main foci of the philosophy of language. The knowledge of meaning belongs to the subject matter of the epistemology of language. A survey of viewpoints of philosophers and linguists on meaning will be given. The designation of sport must inevitably take into consideration the whole realm of various elucidations, among them also those that relate to language. Starting from mythologies as metaphors or reflections of worldly situations and concepts on one hand, and networks of symbols within the Jungian collective unconscious on the other, the etymology of sport-specific terms will be shown to point to their connection with mythologies and consequently cultural paradigms of various civilizations. Hence, the analysis addressing epistemology of language and thereupon the analysis of sport-specific terminology – with particular emphasis on martial arts - will be made on several levels. First, the analysis of etymology, a metasemantic field, of the selected terms and their comparison will yield interesting conceptual matters for discussion regarding western and eastern civilizations. Secondly, through the examples of Zeno’s paradox regarding the race between Achilles - a fast runner - and the tortoise, of Hermes – a deity of athletes and the protector of gymnasiums and stadiums who was believed to be responsible for good luck, and of Hercules who, according to the myth, possessed exceptional strength, certain images will be corroborated as deeply rooted into the mental contents of people and reflected in language. Further, sports idioms are nowadays frequently used in everyday speech which will be explicated by analysing some of the most widely known sports metaphors in several languages. Finally, the language of sport, that is, the messages coded within the sport-specific context but not necessarily used only within that context will disclose how deeply the sport-related images are embodied into the psyche, and consequently into the social context. This may be best evidenced by TV commercials that utilise sport-specific images but also words that are frequently to be found within the context of sporting contests and that denote success, joy, excitement, etc.
