Sažetak
Dissemination of knowledge and research results among scientists nowadays depends, to a large extent, to journal publication practices. In this respect, the language in which scientific journals publish their articles has become a topic of much debate. English as a lingua franca unstoppably gains dominance in this respect. The notion of the 'visibility' of a journal implies its readability by a wider scientific community, which consequently implies that to be visible and understandable on a larger scale means, among other things, to be written in English. The aim of the analysis was to consider the language of publication of Croatian scientific journals in the area of humanities. For the purpose of the analysis the journals were categorized according to their domain (e.g. languages, history, etc.). The analysis has yielded results that enable conclusions in two respects. First, most of the analyzed journals are interdisciplinary and most publish articles written in Croatian only. However, a significant number of journals publish articles written in English and/or in Croatian, but also in some other languages (e.g. German, Italian, French, etc.). Secondly, the journals with the interdisciplinary domain publish articles dominantly in Croatian, followed by journals that have other domains (e.g. history, language, philosophy) that publish articles either in Croatian or in English, or additionally in some other languages. Journals focusing on history, archaeology and history of art publish articles written in Croatian, whereas linguistic journals publish articles in Croatian, English or in some other language (e.g. Italian, French, etc.). However, not publishing in English by no means implies that scientific discoveries published in other languages are of less relevance. Further, some scientific inquiries are more important for a locally bound community, and this by no means makes those discoveries devoid of scientific significance.
