Sažetak
Sporting activities as well as sporting contests have been a part of human civilization since ancient time. Consequently terms used in sport are frequently derived from words originating in general language. Since man is a part of nature, the fact that words connected with it can be found in general language is a logical result. Nowadays a number of terms containing a name of an animal are also used in sport terminology. The analysis in this paper will address a sample of such terms used in the English language. Some German and Croatian counterparts of such terms will be listed. The terms will be compared as for the sport in which they are used (e.g. gymnastics, swimming, etc.), and the sub-group of animals that they belong to (e.g. mammals, birds, etc.). The analysis will yield results that will try to provide an insight into the reasons for selecting a certain name of an animal to become the part of a term.
