Sažetak
The goal of this paper was to assess the knowledge of English sports-specific terms on the one hand, and on the other, to find out whether the interest for a certain sport category contributes to the knowledge of technical vocabulary characteristic for these categories, and consequently to the success on the vocabulary test. The analysis was done on the sample of male students with the Faculty of Kinesiology, University of Zagreb (Croatia). Two measurement instruments were used in this study. The first was the test of knowledge of sport-specific vocabulary. The test consisted of 25 items, i.e. sentences from which a term was omitted. The terms that completed the sentences were selected from several groups of sports: sports with an aesthetic component (e.g. artistic gymnastics), individual sports in which contestants use various implements (e.g. tennis), water sports (swimming, rowing and water sports in general), team sports (basketball, football and team handball) and combat sports (wrestling, karate, tae kwon do, judo and combat sports in general). Five items were selected for each of the five groups of sports. For each sentence the choice of three terms was offered, and the task was to select the appropriate term that completes the sentence. The results of the vocabulary test were then related to the items in the sport-related interest inventory regarding the interest of subjects in 25 sports – five sports per sport category – and scored on a 5-point Likert-type scale. The five statements denoting five degrees on the scale were written based on the five-factor structure of interest of subjects for certain sports obtained in previous research. The role of interest in a certain domain and its correlation with learning seems to be overrated. The results of this analysis have shown that the interrelationship between interest and learning existed only when individual sports in which contestants use various implements are concerned.
