Sažetak
The aim of this research was to compare the two forms of standard examination tests written by the third-year students at the Faculty of Kinesiology, University of Zagreb (Croatia) in the subject English Language. The randomly selected sample was comprised of 50 male and 15 female students, totalling 65, and it was divided into two groups. The first group that consisted of 32 subjects (24 male and 8 female) wrote the A form and the second group (33 subjects - 26 male and 7 female) wrote the B form of the test. Test form and gender were selected as the two categorical predictors for the multivariate two-factor analysis of variance which showed significant differences between the two test forms (p<0.01), but not between genders. The univariate tests of 14 dependent variables (subtests) regarding gender and test form were significant (p<0.01) for three types of subtests: a) synonyms (A form) and antonyms (B form), b) questions and c) prefixes. Since in the mental lexicon synonymy is the most important semantic relation, the students who wrote the test form A achieved better results in this subtest then the students that wrote the test form B in the parallel task regarding antonyms. However, the group that wrote the A form of the test achieved poorer results in the subtest questions which is probably the result of the fact that the present simple and the past simple tenses were used in three - in contrast to two in the test form B – out of four sentences in the affirmative. These differences can be explained by the fact that the subjects were native speakers of Croatian in which questions are formed according to a different principle. The students who wrote the A test form achieved better results in the prefixes subtest. This was probably due to the fact that in the test form A two identical terms also exist in Croatian, whereas in the test form B there was only one such term.
