Sažetak
For hundreds of years Dalmatia was under various linguistic influences due to heterogeneous political options which also affected the selection of the official language. Dalmatia was at the time formally a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire which introduced the mandatory acquisition of German in schools, but nevertheless Dalmatia's historical and cultural ties with Italy were reflected in the use of Italian as the official language. At the moment when the question of the official language became a question of national survival, the influence of German was steadily increasing on both political and linguistic levels. The goal of this paper is to shed some light on the events of the early 20th century, which were a direct consequence of the Monarchy's increasing attempts of Germanization. In addition, the purpose of this paper is to answer certain questions about language in Dalmatia, the cultural and political context, and susceptibility to foreign influences, that is, all the elements outside of language which affected the status of the official language.
