Sažetak
Communication and relationship have been demonstrated to have an impact on patients’ experience of care, to improve patients’ adherence to treatment regimens, clinical outcomes and quality, patient safety, teamwork, cultural sensitivity, and to reduce medical malpractice risk. The aim of this research was to investigate the role of satisfaction with health care on quality of life in women with breast cancer, especially the role of communication skills between healthcare professionals and patients. METHOD: Study included 250 women with breast cancer, one year after diagnosis and treatment (surgery, chemotherapy and radio therapy). Median age was 53. Questionnaires Quality of life C-30 (questionnaire developed to assess the quality of life of cancer patients), InPATSAT 32 (32-item satisfaction with care questionnaire to measure patients’ appraisal of hospital doctors and nurses as well as aspects of care organization and services ; addresses technical competence , information provision, interpersonal skills, availability, waiting time, access, comfort, and overall care perception), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were used for this purpose. RESULTS: Results showed strong correlations between doctors’ technical skills, interpersonal skills, information provision and global health status, as well as nurses’ interpersonal skills, technical skills and information provision. Also, women in our sample showed lower level of anxiety and depression if they estimated that their physicians and nurses had good technical skills, if they received enough information and if medical stuff had a good interpersonal skills. Regression analyzes showed that strongest predictors in explaining Quality of life were firstly information provisions, than interpersonal skills and technical skills. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate importance in establishing good relationship between healthcare professionals and patients in order to improve quality of life, to reduce anxiety and depression and to improve better clinical and health outcome. Healthcare professionals with effective interpersonal skills will have more satisfied patients, and they will be able to give more emotionally to patients and will, in turn, get more satisfying responses from them. Physicians’ comprehensive knowledge of patients and patients’ trust were the most strongly associated with adherence, and trust was the most strongly associated with patients’ satisfaction with physician. And only good communication can prove above mentioned. RESEARCH IMPLICATIONS: Knowing this facts, it can be relevant for further study to evaluate influence of patient-centred communication style on quality of life outcome in women with breast cancer. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Building relationships is extremely important, not only in the beginning, but during the whole patient – physician interaction. If physician provide more information to patients about the disease that will reduce psychological stress, symptoms will disappear quickly, and outcome of treatment will be increased. So, it is very important for healthcare professionals to learn and improve communication skills and to be aware of patient’s biological as well as psychological, social and spiritual needs.
