Sažetak
In this work a simple manufacturing process and equipment for production of cellulose from grass-like feedstock Miscanthus giganteus will be described. Miscanthus is a high quality perennial plant which can be cultivated in different areas. This culture requires direct sunlight and wet soil, but it’s resistant to cold and windy climates and it can be grown on soils of lower quality and those completely inadequate for farming cultures. After the third year of cultivation, the plant reaches a height of up to 4 meters. Once planted Miscanthus has a lifetime of 20-25 years. Dry mass of this plant may provide approximately 80% of cellulose and hemicellulose. Due to its high caloric value previous studies have showed Mischantus suitable also for use in energy production. Production of cellulose from Miscanthus giganteus requires simple machinery which can produce high quality fibres using mild chemicals. This production can also be described as environmental friendly due to lower energy and water consumption. Pulp production process consists of several steps which includes: mechanical comminution and dust removal, digestion, dispersion, dilution, screening and fractionation, dewatering and removing black liquor and bleaching (which could be optional) as last step. The entire production was designed in the Croatian paper mill “Pan-Paper Industry Ltd” and it’s currently in the process of patenting.
