Sažetak
Starting from the definition of complex concepts of modernity and modernization, this paper points out the need of distinguishing the sociological theories of modernity and theories of modernization and development, and then their relationship to culture and religion is analyzed. On the example of the Parson’s classical theory of modernization, as well as the Weber’s classical theory of modernity and his analysis of the process of “disenchantment of the world”, it can be concluded that these classical sociological theories analyzed tradition in opposition to modernity, and it was anticipated that the religion would lose its crucial social significance. The emphasis was on the homogenization of the modern societies, generalization of the values, rationalization, secularization and the hegemony of Western program of the modernity and development. However, in contrast to such predictions of classical theories, today is at work just the opposite. The reality denied assumptions about the hegemony of Western program of modernity and modernization and the necessity of “redefinition of modernity” and different ways of modernization and development is increasingly being recognized. Furthermore, the predictions about the homogenization and generalization of the values are denied, and the tradition is increasingly being recognized as a developmental and modernization potential. In short, culture is seen as an essential and an integral dimension of “culturally sustainable development”. Besides, religious beliefs did not lose their significance, but on the contrary, questioning of the secularization paradigm goes in the direction of Eagleton’s assessment by which we are witnessing a resurgence of the process of “re-enchantment of the late capitalist world”. Therefore, this paper points out the differences between the older and newer theories of modernization and modernity according to the key concepts of culture, religion, tradition and development. The contemporary sociological theories of modernization are shown on the example of the “revised theory of modernization” (Inglehart, Welzel), and the contemporary sociological theories of modernity are shown on the example of the theory of “reflexive modernity” (Beck), the concept of “multiple modernities“ (Eisenstadt), the “critique of modernity“ (Touraine) and the “power of identity” (Castells). Then, a Wallerstein’s critical approach of “culture as an ideological battleground of the modern world system” is analyzed, as well as the Eagleton’s critical analysis of the “cultural turn” and the “politicization of culture”. All these contemporary theories are interrelated with different approaches to culture and religion analyzing their importance in modern societies and in the modern world.
