Sažetak
Blood lead (PbB) and blood cadmium (CdB) was measured in a population of non-smokers living in the vicinity of a lead smelting plant: 101 boys aged 6.5-18 years, 102 girls aged 7-18.5 years, and 88 women aged 20.5-59 years. The median PbB levels within the groups showed an order of: boys>girls>women, whereas the corresponding CdB levels showed an order of women>boys>girls. A significant increase in CdB levels with respect to PbB levels was found in boys (r=0.197, P<0.05) but not in girls (r=0.188, P>0.05) or in women (r=0.108, P>0.30). A decrease in PbB with respect to age was highly significant (P<0.001 in women (r=-0.369) as well as in all females (r=-0.324), but was significant at all in either boys (r=-0.057, P>0.50) or girls (r=-0.075, P>0.40). Contrary to the PbB levels, a highly significant increase in CdB with respect to age was found in all females (r=0.431, P<0.001) and the same trend was found in girls (r=0.141, P>0.10). However, an opposite relationship between CdB and age was found in women (r=-0.030, P<0.05), and an absence of any trend was observed in women (R=-0.030, P>0.70). In a subgroup consisting of 65 children (33 boys and 32 girls) and their mothers, a highly significant (P<0.001) relationship was found between the PbB levels in all children with respect to their mothers (r=0.634) as well as for boys (r=0.721), and a less significant relationship was found between the PbB in girls with respect to their mothers (r=0.523, P<0.01). Contrary to PbB levels, no significant relationship was found between the CdB levels in children with respect to their mothers, either for all children(r=0.048, P>0.70) or boys (r=-0.052, P>0.70).
