Sažetak
Epilepsy is one of the most frequent and most severe neurologic diseases with an annual incidence of 0.3%-0.6%. It is considered that about one third to one half of patients with epilepsy suffer from generalized tonic-clonic seizures, while other patients have partial seizures. Between 50% and 75% of the patients on antiepileptic therapy achieve complete remission within five years. When epileptic seizures cannot be controlled by monotherapy, other anticonvulsants are being introduced in various combinations and doses with the aim of preventing seizures. In 10%-20% of patients epilepsy is therapy resistant, and these patients mostly have partial seizures. Furthermore, side effects occur in almost 50% of patients and very often limit the success of treatment. Thus, the efforts of pharmaceutical industry to find new drugs with better efficacy and greater safety and tolerability are easily understandable. One of the promising drugs is gabapentin, used as an adjuvant therapy in the treatment of partial epilepsy. In the article are presented pharmacological characteristics and clinical efficacy of gabapentin in the treatment of partial epilepsy. Pharmacologic characteristics and clinical efficacy of gabapentin in the treatment of partial epilepsy are presented.
