Sažetak
In the Gorski Kotar highlands of Croatia, above Stara Sušica village, on a dolomite basis rich in low lying flora, a remarkable beech and fir forest is located. This forest is very rich in dormice as a part of small mammal community. Three dormice species - Muscardinus avellanarius, Dryomys nitedula and Myoxus glis - are confirmed. On a 1, 1 ha plot, fir, beech and maple trees are predominant and forest is rich with different old trees and bushes floor. At the end of July Muscardinus avellanarius (13, 6 specimens/ha), Dryomys nitedula (4, 5 animals/ha) and Myoxus glis (0, 9 animals/ha only) have been observed. Such a low incidence in M. glis number hunters ascribe to a poor i. e. bad blooming and consequently to a small amount of the beechmast in a particular year. All the dormice have been marked by a tattoo method but after two months (in September) only the marked M. glis specimen has been observed again. The nest-boxes have been used only temporarily by most animals, but a part of D. nitedula and M avellanarius populations nested in the nest-boxes, too. D. nitedula used exclusively the moss as nest construction material, and M. avellanarius used beech leaves and grass leaves forming the ball-shaped nest. Titmice, bumblebees, night butterflies, large slugs used the nest-boxes, too. In two nest-boxes the ants forced the dormice out from the nest-boxes simply by constructing an ant-hill in the nest. The future follow-up research studies should give the information about a possible competition between M. avellanarius and D. nitedula, as well as possible predation of dormice versus birds (M. glis versus smaller species etc.).
