Sažetak
In the subalpine forest of beech with alpine coltsfoot (Homogyno alpinae-Fagetum sylvaticae) on the peak of Zavižan, north Mt Velebit, small terrestrial fauna was systematically collected for the first time. In conjunction with data collected randomly with the help of the Vukušić family near the mountain hut on Vučjak near Zavižan ever since 1974, in 1995 and 1996 we applied the modified method of a Y-shaped pitfall-drift fence array. Almost the complete small terrestrial fauna of the upper border of the highest forest association on the NE slope of Veliki Zavižan peak at 1650 m a.s.l. was registered on the plot of 0.07 ha. Over 70% of the entire small mammal species were registered in three catches, and in the second year the dominant species could be clearly quantitatively differentiated. Annual fluctuations of certain species were registered ; these could take longer to study. The common shrew Sorex araneus was dominant among the vertebrates and the ground beetle Nebria dahlii velebitica among invertebrates. Of the about 50 species identified so far from 7 animal groups, as many as 30 were registered for the first time for this association in Croatia. The impact of the methodology on the results is discussed and the results are preliminary compared with those for the fauna of other mountain and subalpine forest habitats.
