Sažetak
Purpose:  To compare the advantages and limitations of multi detector and micro CT in analysis of dental cremated remains.   Methods and Materials : 53 cremated teeth from 5 graves were micro-excavated from urns and scanned using the SkyScan 1076 (Bruker, Belgium) micro CT Scanner with the resolution of 18 um. Previously, specimens were scanned on an Sensation 16, a MDCT unit (Siemens Healthcare, Germany) using 16 x 0.75 collimation and 0.7 mm reconstruction increment (RI). 8 teeth (from grave marked 69) were subjected to analysis of micro cracks using the CTAn (Bruker, Belgium) . Results: Enamel, dentin and root canals could have easily been identified on reconstructed images. Micropores observed on axial images were quantified for each tooth, respectively. Total porosity induced by cremation ranged from 5, 326 % to 14, 946 % depending on the tooth size. Further analysis revealed open porosity ranging between 4.565% and 13.122%, while closed porosity ranged between 0.539% to 2.099%. Discussion: Micro CT offers a new insights into imaging of ancient dental cremated remains as spacial contrast is several hundred times greater compared to MDCT. During cremationteeth undergo many changes, including pyrolysis, dehydration and carbonization. Micro cracks that were observed in all the teeth have to be results of these processes. Detailed analysis clearly shows that open porosity attributed to the total porosity in a greater extent than closed porosity. Additional research and comparison with remains that were not subjected to cremation is needed, but the limited quantity of unburned archeological materials from Croatian Late Bronze Age puts an additional challenge.
