Sažetak
The cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is the most serious neurological problem in the world. In 1965 Mahoney and Barthel published a weighted scale for measuring the basic activities of daily living concerning the chronically disable patients, known as Barthel index (BI, from O to 100). The aim of this research is to show the use of BI as an indicator of successful rehabilitation after CVA. The research was performed on 100 patients, 56 women and 44 men. Their average age being 68.5 years, from 38 to 87 years. They were treated with various combinations of motion and muscle strengthening exercises, mobilization activities, as well as compensatory techniques, cold, TENS, occupation and speech therapy, four weeks after the CVA. The BI was measured both at the beginning of therapy and after the four weeks of rehabilitation. The average BI value at the beginning was 35.42, while after the rehabilitation it was 63.60. The statistically significant difference of the total BI was recorded both before and after the rehabilitation (p=O.OOO), as well as the statistically significant improvement of the functional dependence categories after the rehabilitation (p=O.OOO). All abilities comprised in the BI showed statistically improvements. This research proves that the BI can be used both as a benefit indicator and as one of the factors in evaluating successful rehabilitation.
