Sažetak
During the period of peace (1988-1989), the most common causes of aphasia in patients undergoing rehabilitation at our Department were cerebrovascular diseases (87.3%), brain turnors (7.8%) and trauma (4.9%). During the war period (1992-1993), a change occurred in the pathology in general, thus also in the causes of aphasia in patients visiting the Department for rehabilitation. The proportion of patients- war victims increased additionally for many other indications (e.g., traumatic amputation of extremities, traumatic damage to peripheral nerves, etc.). Beside this, a change also occurred in the percentage of the causes of aphasia in patients hospitalized at the Department: cerebrovascular diseases (76.1%), brain tumors (5.3%) and war trauma (18.6%). During the war, 45 war-wounded patients were treated at the Department for rehabilitation of aphasia which developed consequentially to craniocerebral injury inflicted in action. Thirty out of these 45 patients presented regularly for speech therapy, and most of them as inpatients. The majority of patients were soldiers, members of the Croatian Army and Croatian Council of Defence from Bosnia and Herzegovina, aged 18-40 years, inflicted explosive devi ce and gunshot wounds, with complex consequences, including vision and hearing 1055, peripheral nerve paralysis and psychic disorders. Rehabilitation produced satisfactory resuIts in the patients in whom the preconditions of speech therapy individualization, timely beginning of aphasia rehabilitation, family cooperation, and complex rehabilitation process with physical therapy were met. Complexity of wounding, polytrauma, death of family mernbers, prolonged duration of the process of speech rehabilitation and late initiation of speech rehabilitation are the most common causes of poor resuits of aphasia rehabilitation in these patients.
