Sažetak
Maize is main field crop in Croatia covering about 300 thousand ha or 30% of used arable lands in the country. Annual yield variations of maize in the 5-year period 2006-2010 were from 4.9 to 8.0 t ha-1, mainly as affected by degree of weather favorability for maize growth. With that regard, precipitation and temperature regime, especially in July and August, are very important. Aim of this study was comment of the 2012 and 2013 growing season in Croatia with aspect of maize growing based on the meteorological data (precipitation and air-temperatures) for six weather bureaus (Osijek, Slavonski Brod, Bjelovar, Sisak, Zagreb and Varazdin). Both growing seasons were characterized by the higher air-temperatures compared to the 30-year average. With that regard, temperature were for 2.4 oC and 0.9 oC higher (Osijek) and for 2.5 and 1.5 oC higher (Varazdin), for 2012 and 2013, respectively. Stress of maize plants as affected by the high temperatures was considerably more intensive in 2012, especially in August. For example, absolute maximal air-temperature in the first and the third 10-day period of August in Osijek were above 40 oC, while these values in Varazdin were close to 3 oC lower. Also, the long-term average air-temperature in Osijek (17.6 oC) were 1.3 oC higher than in Varazdin. In general, precipitation regime was more favorable in 2013, compared to the previous year, mainly because of adequate precipitation in July and August.
