Sažetak
For more than two decades, the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS) has succeeded in mobilizing a large number of Istrian voters around a regional political identity, founded on the multicultural specificity of the Istrian peninsula, as well as the particular economic interests, sense of community and connection with an area set apart from the rest of the country. The Istrian Democratic Assembly links regionalism with liberalism and a strong antifascist tradition, yet at the same time stands for the protection of Christian tradition in Istria. This puts the party in an ambivalent position, i.e., there is a chasm between the wish to connect the voters in the peninsula’s interior (Croatian Catholic identity) and the urban electorate on the Western coast of Istria (a multicultural and multidenominational milieu marked by strong secularization). The sensitive position of Istrian regionalism, especially toward neighboring Italy, was manifested in the Dajla case, i.e., in the conflict between the local Bishop of Poreč and Pula, Msgr. Ivan Milovan, and the Italian Benedictines, who were backed by the Holy See. Furthermore, the County of Istria represents a curious case because this part of Croatia has the highest percentage of atheists and non-believers, yet at the same time the Istrian peninsula saw the greatest number of priests and friars join the ranks of the People’s Liberation Army during World War II. The Istrian Democratic Assembly insists on the legacy of the Partisan Movement but also tries to be a catch-all party of the Istrian populace. Therefore, the party actively partook in the large celebration of the beatification of Miroslav Bulešić, a priest who suffered martyrdom during the post-World War II period. The aim of this paper is to examine and depict the specific features of the overlapping of secularism and Catholic tradition in this part of Croatia.
