Sažetak
Multilingualism as an educational goal of European citizens has recently been in the focus of attention of EU policy makers. The concept of multilingualism is thereby understood as the knowledge of two foreign languages in addition to the mother tongue. The importance of such "European" multilingualism and the need for its development is emphasised in EU documents, especially with regard to the role of multilingualism in the process of EU integration. One of the key areas in the promotion of European multilingualism is foreign language learning. In this context, the important glottodidactic an methodological aspects are: the foreign language sequence in early foreign language learning ; the duration of foreign language study ; differentiation in determining the competence levels in individual language skills ; the role of intercultural competence ; the role of the first foreign language and the significance of English as the language of global communication in the concept of European multilingualism. The chapter refers to the scientific discussion led in the German-speaking area, which reveals the contrasting positions regarding the glottodidactic and methodological implementation of the concept of European multilingualism.
