Sažetak
The purpose of this research is to provide an overview of the EU regional and cohesion policy as well as the role of pre-accession assistance in Croatia as preparation for the use of structural instruments once becoming a member. Special importance is given to the possibility of Croatia to absorb funds offered by the EU before and after the accession. Croatia’s potential is illustrated trough the analysis of utilized pre-accession funds and trough analyzing the overall EU spending and its distribution throughout the regions of the EU based on specific objectives. This paper provides background information on objectives and history of EU structural and cohesion policy, and it tries to answer the question the main principles and sources of financing are and which relevant institutions are in charge of its implementation. The research further analyses Croatia’s regional policy development and its progress in adoption of the EU regional and cohesion policy. It continues by describing the amount of allocated funding envisaged for each member state. The last part describes pre-accession funds available in Croatia and preparation for the use of structural instruments.
