Sažetak
Unlike students of Nautical Studies and Marine Engineering, the undergraduate students of Maritime Management at Faculty of Maritime Studies in Split lacked "conventional" printed English teaching materials that would enhance their language competence and make them more employable in a variety of business environments related to small craft navigation and chartering, nautical tourism, yacht and marina technologies, boatbuilding and shipbuilding, marine environment preservation, port management, shipping, marine insurance, etc. In response to such a situation, a content-based and problem-based English textbook was created. This paper discusses a number of issues and aspects that were taken into consideration prior to designing the concept of the textbook: targeted student population, language competence previously acquired at high-school level, selecting topics / case studies, cross-curricular correlation with other courses, design of units, developing exercises, visual aids, tests and other tools... having in mind not only the future competencies of the students in their respective maritime fields, but also their needs in future schooling (graduate studies and life-long learning). Students' responses gathered in class and anonymous questionnaires show that the teaching materials and practice a) meet most of the primary objectives such as acquiring ESP vocabulary and structures, developing communication and learning skills, better understanding of a number of real-life issues, etc ; b) help the students familiarise with the essence of other courses, but c) further fine-tuning is needed in order to enhance students' creativity in speaking / writing and to encourage their independent thinking (e.g. SWOT analysis, reasoning, argumentation, interpretation).
